History & Product Overview
In 1989, the British Columbia Research and Development
Institute, an internationally recognized Government research facility,
located at the University of British Columbia, developed the Safe Solution
for Mr. Don Dafoe, President of Global Safe Technologies Inc.
The company has operated locally in British Columbia
for several years before decided to move Canada wide and finally to expand
internationally. Now it is also represented in the US and Australia.
The Australian Master Distributorship was acquired by
Tibor Bode in December 2003 and this is how the local operations have
started. Albeit the initial shipment arrived only in early April, the
local entity has already started to make considerable inroads to the Australian
market and has some well-known name on its client list. The Australian
operation works in a franchise system that already has several dealers
recruited, mainly in New South Wales.
The Safe Solution® is a remarkable anti-slip treatment
that has been field tested in hospitals, hotels, restaurants, offices,
nursing homes, health clubs, industrial areas, and tiled decks surrounding
pools and spas. The Safe Solution® provides increased positive traction
on floors covered with ceramic tile, porcelain tile, quarry / clinker
tile, and granite. When spilled on these treated surfaces, water and grease
no longer pose as great a hazard. In the bathroom, porcelain/steel enamel
bathtubs have a definite slip-fall potential when water and soap contaminate
the surface area. One application of the Safe Solution? and the traction
is improved by as much as 300%.
In Australia, we worked together with the CSIRO to have
tiles independently tested that were treated with the Safe Solution?.
The test results that are fully compliant with the relevant and latest
Australian standards have shown and average of 350% improvement in traction
on glossy tiles.
Over 540,000 slip-fall injuries, requiring hospital care,
occur in North America each year. In Slip-falls account for over 20,000
fatalities per year in North America – i.e. 55 persons per day.
It is the second leading cause of accidental death and disability after
automobile accidents.
Slip-falls are the number one cause of accidents in Hotels,
Restaurants, and Public Buildings; 70% occur on flat and level surfaces.
In the home, bathrooms and kitchens account for a staggering
number of slip-fall injuries. There are estimated to be 8 million slip-fall
accidents per year in North America. Falls make up nearly half of all
home accidents. In North America, the total expenses resulting from slip-fall
injuries alone are over $36 Billion a year, or over a $100 million per
day problem. In Canada alone, Health Canada reports falls as a $2.8 Billion
Health Care expenditure, which must be resolved.
In Australia the available figures show around 28,000
injuries which cost to the Australian community around $3 billion annually
and growing very fast with the aging population.
Richard Bowman - an internationally recognized scientist
of the CSIRO and he is chairing several Committees related to tiles and
slip falls at Standards Australia – writes in an article titled
Legal and Practical Aspects of Problems Arising from Slippery Floors:
“It has been stated (Hughes) that in almost
60% of slippery floors, some blame has to be attached to poor cleaning
and maintenance routines. It has been estimated that in Australia, 74%
of public liability claims relate to slips and falls, 86% of these incidents
were preventable, and that 77% of the preventable incidents related to
cleaning practices.”
